2020.06.21 23:02 bryceryals42 Major League Redditball Independent Demographics Survey: RESULTS

Hey y'all! As most of you know, I've been running a demographics survey over the last week or so. Time to reveal the results!
Of the 559 people currently on active MLR rosters, 139 filled out the survey, good for 24.86% participation. It's hard to draw any conclusions from only surveying about 1/4 of the league, but we'll do our best.
What year did you join the MLR?
Most people who put 2016 either didn't realize that you couldn't sign up as a player in 2016 or were fake submissions. I sorted through which ones were harmless mistakes and which were frauds, and came up with the following results. The leading answer was 2020, represented by 31.9% of submissions. 2019 came in second with 29.7%, followed by 2018 at 22.5% and 2017 at 15.9%.
How many MLR seasons have you participated in?
These answers followed those of the previous question, as the most common response was 1, which was the case for 33.1% of people who filled out the form. 27.3% said 2, 18.7% said 3, 14.4% said 4, and 6.5% has been around for all 5 seasons.
How old are you?
38.8% of those who completed the survey fall into the 18-22 age bracket. The next highest percentage belongs to the 23-27 bracket, which makes up 21.6% of the pie. 13.7% said 15-17, 8.6% said 27-30, 8.6% said 30-35, 2.9% said 12-14, 2.9% said 35-40, and 1.4% said that they were Older than 50.
What team do you play for?
The most common team that appeared on the survey was the Kansas City Royals, with 12 submissions. My Los Angeles Angels came in 2nd with 11. Other notable teams were the Minnesota Twins and New York Mets who had 9 a piece, as well as the Baltimore Orioles and Arizona Diamondbacks, who each had 7. 28 of the 30 teams had at least 2 team members fill out the survey. Both the Texas Rangers and Cleveland Indians failed to have a single player fill out the survey. Finally, 1 of the 139 submissions came from a player who was Retired.
Do you live in the United States?
85.6% said that they do live in the United States, while 14.4% said that they live outside of the U.S.A.
If you live in the United States, what state do you live in?
The most common state that appeared on the survey was New York, which appeared 12 times. Illinois appeared 8 times, while Florida and Texas each had 7. Minnesota and California each had 6, and Connecticut followed right behind them with 6. Other states (abbreviated) that appeared included NJ, CO, NC, GA, OH, MI, MO, NM, DC, MA, WA, IN, SC, AL, MD, TN, PA, HI, WI, VA, KY, OR, NV, SD, NE, ND, and DE. 7 said that they Would rather not answer.
If you do not live in the United States, what country do you live in?
Of the 20 people who listed a non-American country of residence, 10 of them live in Canada. The United Kingdom has 3 representatives, while The Netherlands has 2. Other countries who were represented on the survey include Denmark, Singapore, Portugal, and Panama. One person also stated that they lived in Europe without stating a country.
Which of the following best describes you? (Position in life)
33.1% of those who filled out the survey said that they would describe themselves as a Full-Time Worker. 27.3% said that they are an Undergraduate College Student. 15.8% responded with High School Student, while 6.5% said they are an Undergraduate College Student w/ a Full-Time Job. 4.3% are a Part-Time Worker, 4.3% are a Graduate College Student, 2.9% are Unemployed, and 0.7% are in the Military. 1.4% said they Would rather not answer.
For those who chose an option that included a current Full-Time or Part-Time job, what line of work are you currently in?
I received quite a few different answers, and really there wasn't any answer that appeared more than 2 or 3 times. Quite a few people work in various STEM fields, including computer engineering, software development, mechanical engineering, and other related tech/math-based fields. A few people work in nursing/EMS, a few are in television/broadcasting, and a few even work in the Sports field, doing team sales or management. 4 people listed their occupation as Military. In terms of oddities, 1 person said they were a Fisherman, and 1 said that they are a full-time Actor. Also one person is a full-time bartender, so that seems like a fun Friday night hangout.
Which of the following best describes you? (Gender)
In the least predictable statistic to date, 95.0% said that they were Male. 2.2% said they were Female. 1.4% listed themselves as Non-Binary, 0.7% said Unsure, and 0.7% said they Would rather not answer.
Which of the following best describes you? (Race/Ethnicity)
80.6% listed themselves as White/Caucasian, which is 4/5 of those who filled out the survey. 5.8% listed themselves as Asian, 4.3% responded with Hispanic/Latino, and 3.6% said they were both White Caucasian and Asian. Only 1.4% responded with Black/African American, and only 0.7% responded with Asian/Pacific Islander.
What is your relationship status?
62.6% said they are Single. In terms of other common responses, 19.4% said they are In a closed relationship, 12.9% said they are Married, and 2.2% said they are In an open/polyamorous relationship.
How many hours per week do you spend playing, working, or contributing to Fake Baseball?
Surprisingly, 85.8% said that they spend 10 hours or less each week on Fake Baseball, meaning that 14.2% spend more than a full work day on our great game. 62.7% spend 5 hours or less on our game per week, while 27.0% spend 2 hours or less per week. On the other hand, 8.8% said they spend 20 hours or more per week on our game, and 3.2% said they spend 30 hours or more per week.
What month of the year were you born in?
The most common answer was May with 12.2%, followed by June with 10.8% and February with 10.8%. Other common answers included July with 9.4%, January with 8.6%, and March with 7.9%. The least common response was October with 4.3%.
What is your favorite brand of soda?
While 18.7% responded with the ol' N/A, the actual leading votegetter was Coke with 15.8%. Dr. Pepper followed close behind with 13.7%, and Sprite was next with 8.6%. Other common answers included Pepsi with 5.0%, and Barq's, Mountain Dew, "Root Beer", and Water each with 2.9%.
How many teams have you played for?
The vast majority of survey submissions (61.3%) said that they have only played on 1 team in their MLR career. 23.4% said they have played on 2 teams, 7.3% said 3, 5.8% said 4, and 2.2% have been on 5 teams. Just 1 submitter said they have been on More than 5 teams.
Have you ever received any awards from the MLR for your on-field accomplishments?
Just 24.5% said that they have received an award for their on-field accomplishments at some point in their career. Nearly 3/4 of those surveyed have NOT received an award, and 0.7% said they Would rather not answer.
Have you enjoyed your time in Major League Redditball?
82.7% said Yes, 15.8% said Kinda-sorta, and just 1.4% said No. I hope those 1.4% will someday find happiness and enjoyment around here. Or not. Whatever you want I suppose.
What is your favorite convenience store brand?
The Dallas-based 7-Eleven won with 24.5% (nearly a quarter) of the vote. 12.2% went with the Mid-Atlantic (and Florida)-based Wawa, followed by Circle K, which had 7.2%. Other notable responses included Sheetz (6.5%), QuikTrip (5.8%), Casey's (4.3%), Buc-ee's (3.6%), Speedway (3.6%), RaceTrac (3.6%), Kwik Trip (2.2%), Kum & Go (2.2%), Stewart's (1.4%), Cumberland Farms (1.4%), Kangaroo Express (1.4%), and Holiday (1.4%).

Hi Californians! (I hope this post is okay but Modmins please let me know otherwise.)
My friends and I are looking to make new friends within an active Southern California community. If you live in SoCal and are looking for friends, please check out SOCAL ASIAN INTERACTIVE on Facebook & our Discord Server! We're a social and networking group based in Southern California with members who meetup throughout regions such as Orange County, Los Angeles, San Gabriel Valley, San Fernando Valley, Inland Empire, and San Diego. We do IRL meet ups and even fun online activities (in lieu of the madness going on with the world right now)-- (attached images).

We're only two months old and are looking for new friends to either meet up IRL or chat online with. You can find us on Facebook and Discord. If you have any questions, our Admins on the Facebook group can answer them for you. No, you don't have to live in SoCal or be Asian to join. :)

This past week, there was a sharp rally in bitcoin above the $7,500 and $8,000 resistances against the US Dollar. BTC even surged above the $9,500 and $10,000 levels before correcting lower.
Later, the price corrected below the $9,500 support and the $9,000 pivot zone. However, the decline was contained below $9,000 and the price remained well above the 100 hourly simple moving average.
A low was formed near $8,896 and bitcoin started a fresh increase. It broke the $9,000 and $9,200 resistance levels. Moreover, there was a break above the 50% Fib retracement level of the downward correction from the $10,578 high to $8,896 low.
However, the price seems to be facing a strong resistance near $9,850 and $9,900. Besides, the 61.8% Fib retracement level of the downward correction from the $10,578 high to $8,896 low prevented any further upsides.

2017.08.09 10:07 evrien [Guangzhou YACA] Day 3 Report: Dimsum Chow-down, Weeb Shopping, Farewell

Hi all,
Evrien here. At the time of writing, I just got back to my house in Los Angeles. Toy and Axarious parted ways with me at San Francisco airport, and I saw them off, confirming that I had completed my mission of escorting them this entire trip. I then took a greyhound bus (an inter-city economic long distance bus service) from SF to Los Angeles, which took roughly 8 hours, and am now writing the report I promised.
So Day 3, we had no obligation to wake up early as convention was over on Day 2. We had originally planned to send back the players on Day 3, but I urged Christmas to let them stay an extra day because I thought they'd be interested in looking around the city and do some shopping. All players would be sent back on the 8th. However, due to some miscommunication with the Chinese booking service XieCheng (携程), Toy, Axarious, and myself had to leave on the 7th (Day 3) because we had to catch a morning flight not in Guangzhou but Hong Kong. When we had realized that XieCheng booked us the wrong date (we were supposed to go back on 9th in the original plan), we called back and XieCheng thought that we had wanted to cancel our order altogether, pulled a low one on us and straight-up printed our tickets, thereby enacting the non-refundable and non-changeable policy. As a result, we 3 had to change our plans to leave early. So here's a tip from us: If you ever want to travel in China, DON'T use XieCheng.
As I had mentioned, we have a super sick pool in the hotel, and I notified the players of this and told them to bring swimming pants before the trip. However, due to that we were busy the previous 2 days and the pool would close by 10 PM each day, we didn't go. If you had paid attention to the previous reports, you would know that we usually came back to our hotel exhausted and way past 10 PM. As a result, we didn't swim at all over the past couple of days. Rucker in the morning decided he had enough, and he woke up early at around 9 AM for a quick round of swimming. Angelsim, Cookiezi, Toy, Axarious, and myself went to check up on him before our scheduled rendezvous time at 10:30 AM. Then we met up at the 70th floor lobby and took a final gathering photo at the hotel. Now I saw that someone had taken the effort to label out all the players in the pic, and I thank him/her for that initiative. The guy kneeling on the left side of the front row was not Dsan but FengLing (a Chinese nickname, 'wind chime') - a staff who helped us out during the convention and a friend of Christmas'. Dsan and Wobeinimacao left after convention the previous day to catch a ride back to Shenzhen because they have work the following day.
We then headed to eat Dimsum, a world-famous Chinese culinary segment that had originated in this very city, Guangzhou! Now, technically Dimsum just means "snack/dessert", and the actual eating it as a meal would be called "Yimcha/Yamcha" (饮茶, "tea-drinking"). Yes, like the DBZ character Yamcha. Just like how the English have afternoon tea, Guangzhou people have "morning tea", which is Yimcha. So Christmas and Doma found a local restaurant they think would be good to bring everyone over, and we went there. Christmas went all-out and ordered WAY more food than we could handle. From chicken claws to shrimp dumplings to Chinese breakfast cake to soup dumplings, we made sure that everyone was completely stuffed before leaving. Due to being hungover the previous day, Cookiezi almost did not eat anything, and he said he still had little appetite today. Having known how regularly sickly Cookiezi is, we were kind of expecting this, but we were still very worried. So we got him a bowl of porridge, and after having some he seemed to have recovered some appetite. He had some bits of food at the table and that's at least something.
Meanwhile, the restaurant also had English translations to the menus, but due to machine translations many items were mis-translated...horribly, and Toy, Rafis, and Polack poked fun at them. For instance, "Lifelihood Nutrients Supplement Porridge" got translated to "Semen Porridge" for whatever fucking reason. Angelsim and Cookiezi also laughed at a dish that somehow got translated to "Little Dude". Rixia Mao led Polack and Max eating as much as they could. Wolf and ArtxE got into a fierce eating contest. ArtxE was known in the Chinese community for his speed and also appetite, and so seeing him getting locked down into a eating contest with another person is quite rare. But due to that we had so much food leftover, we welcomed their rivalry, but even though with those 2 we did not finish everything on the table.
Rucker then left us after the meal because he had to fly back to Taiwan, and so we said good-bye to him first. We had originally planned to go take a look at the Guangzhou Tower, but because we had different schedules we changed it to a shopping trip at 动漫星城 (Dong man xing cheng, "Anime City"). As the name suggests, it's a mall dedicated to anime, manga, games, fashion, subculture, etc. in Guangzhou. We got there and everyone reported to feel thirsty. The day was hot, and we only had some coke and sprite at the restaurant so naturally some of us felt very dehydrated. Doma immediately located a Dakasi, and we all picked up some delicious mango/blueberry slushies. Wolf and Rafis, who didn't order mango slushies the first time they went to Dakasi on Day 1, were amazed at the drink because apparently they had never had mango before. I guess tropical fruits were quite rare in Poland. Cookiezi, despite not having much of an appetite earlier, seemed to really enjoy his slushie. We then went into the mall and did some weeb shopping.
Now even though we were all osu! players, we were not all anime fans, at least not in the same degree and intensity. When I learned that Rafis failed to 3-mod FC Hitorigoto, I knew I couldn't let slip the opportunity to meme him. We went by an anime store and found that it was selling weeb shirts, so I went ahead and asked the clerk in Chinese if he had anything Rafis' size, while pointing at the Polish player. Rafis, who doesn't understand Chinese, was confused why I would reference him, until he saw that the clerk was reaching for a Sagiri T-shirt. Cookiezi and Angelsim laughed and urged him to accept the gift, which he did. Judging from the pic he took later that night, I guess he did like it to an extent (lol).
Polack was arguably the most excited person that day. Because Anime City also had many stores that sell K-Pop goods, and according to Polack Poland and Sweden had very little such resources, he was close to fangasming when he saw an entire store dedicated to K-Pop and featuring much goods related to G-Dragon. He grabbed me away from the gang and asked me to translate for him the prices and his shopping needs. The clerk, very amused at the prospect of a fanboy foreigner, kept on introducing more G-Dragon goods to us, and Polack eventually just went into a "fuck it give me everything if it has G-Dragon on it". Somehow, we only spent about 150 CNY in that store, and Polack became a very happy man with a bag of very happy goods to leave that store.
Other players were hanging around in weeb shops. Angelsim saw a Chinese meme wallet that has phrase "Your Mama Boom Shakalaka" written on it and found it hilarious, and bought it without a second thought. I thought that Rafis may have had enough with this weeb shit, so I dragged him away with Polack to do some more clothing shopping. According to the two Europeans, Poland and Sweden lacked fashionable clothes, and so they naturally can't let go of this chance. Polack saw a girl with a shirt he liked, and he asked me to go up and ask where they got it. The girl and her friend were obviously taken back at being stopped by me, who's followed by 2 anxiously-looking foreigners, but they were nice enough to lead us to the store in the mall that sells it. Once there, Polack exploded into the happiest version of himself I had ever seen, and when the girls asked for a picture he and Rafis quickly agreed. Funnily enough, the store sells mainly girl's clothes or fem-leaning unisex, as with every other store in this mall (because only school girls come here, according to the clerks). Nonetheless, Rafis and Polack still found clothes matching them, and the styles were fashionable enough. Rafis did point out that a shirt had random gibberish written all over it except one cohesive phrase "I love war"...which would still be weird, for it has no context whatsoever. Polack was the textbook example of the Chinese proverb "when a mouse had fallen into a rice jar" - describing a scenario of a person reaching somewhere where his/her favorite things are abundant. He quickly picked up 8 shirts that had costed him 650 RMB in total - which he said the same price could only get him 1 shirt in Sweden. He was only stopped because he had no more cash left. Had he enough cash, I would not be surprised in the slightest if he were to buy the entire store.
Then 5 PM came and I had to call Toy and Axarious to go, because we still had to get back to our hotel and grab our luggage before heading to Shenzhen, which I estimated would take about 2 more hours. Saying a final goodbye, we could tell that we all were very reluctant to see each other go. I guess this is the magic of osu! meetups - players who had never met in real life would feel like they were friends at birth. We knew that we would still see each other online, but parting is still hard. We took one last group picture together with the remaining players, and parted ways.
For my final presentation to Toy and Axarious, I decided to take them back to Shenzhen via the highly praised High Speed Railway system. Shenzhen and Guangzhou, the 3rd and 4th Tier-1 cities in China, are about 2 hours apart by car, but a high-speed train can connect the 2 cities within 40 minutes. By Toy's insistence, we had McDonald's at the train station where we once again ordered the Grilled Chicken Sandwich. However, the McDonald's somehow had no fries...which was a first for all of us. I mean come on - WHICH FUCKING MCD'S DOESN'T SERVE FRIES? Toy was especially salty as he demanded we go get fries later. He did eventually the next morning at Hong Kong airport. We sat in the McD's and chatted as we were waiting for our train. Toy, Axarious, and I talked about many things surrounding osu! tournaments - from OWC to general tourneys, structures, mappools, etc., and it was a really cool experience to be able to sit down with 2 OWC champions and listen to their take while sharing your own. We then boarded our train and headed back to Shenzhen. However, Toy and I quickly realized that we had eaten way too much Dimsum, and we were in dire need for a restroom break. The first thing we did when we got to my house was to make a dash for toilet.
The following morning we departed for Hong Kong airport, and that concludes the trip from my perspective. The Polish players, Shige, Angelsim, Rustbell, Toki, Doma, and ArtxE did spend another night in Guangzhou partying, and I only heard from them bits of pieces here and there. Apparently, Rafis had some fun playing VR Kanojo and lifting skirts of anime girls. When Doma did room-check after the players had left, he discovered lots of things left behind by the players, especially from the Polish room. He reported to have found glasses, clothes, and skin lotions. I wonder if they no longer need these, how much can we sell them online for  ...just kidding :P
And that's about it for my Day 3 report! While on plane I remembered some bits of stories that I forgot to share with you guys, so here goes:

After coming back from Day 1 drinking party, Angelsim stumbled into the Asian room as Doma and Tokichii were on the PC testing out some things. According to Tokichii, Angelsim had to literally hold onto the wall while walking down the hallway into the room, and as soon as he entered he said "let me play osu!". Doma and Tokichii let him onto the computer, and Angelsim tried to play Hitorigoto, but failed and he collapsed onto the floor: "Rafis fucking lied", he said. "Being drunk doesn't make you better!"

Angelsim bought a bunch of Sagiri-related merchandise and I told him that I found it amusing how all the Koreans I know love Sagiri. "Not me," said Cookiezi who was next to us. "I love Yamada Elf." "It's because you aren't full Korean." Said Angelsim. "Yeah, I'm Korepanese." Answered Cookiezi.
<"This is the best food...">
Christmas had commented that Polack was the most genuine foreigner he had met. Every meal we've had, the Polish players would comment "This is the BEST food I've ever had!"...and then immediately do the same again the next one. We were pretty sure that we were very close to convincing them to change flag to play for China in OWC :).

The hotel toilets were very advanced and they have automated cleaning and rinsing system installed, which fascinated the Polish players. The gang then decided to name theirs "Marek" for whatever reason, and took a group selfie together with it.
============Questions taken from Twitter============
Q: "do you think that YACA ended in a great success? / have any plans for future meetup? / how was your feeling during YACA?" [email protected]
A: I do believe that YACA was a great success! We did have some troubles here and there (like the hangover on Day 2), but we all had tons of fun, and I think everyone left with good memories from Guangzhou! And to me, personally, the entire YACA was an unbelievable journey because I could have never dreamed of meeting Wolf, Rafis, Cookiezi, and Angelsim in real life, and it's not just them that I had met! I am very glad to have been a part and to have been able to help out. As for future plans for the event, we have no idea yet, or at least I personally don't know. Last year Christmas sponsored a smaller scale meetup for the SPD players, and we had thought that was the best it could get, but months earlier this year he told us about YACA and we were all very shocked. So I guess only time could tell.
Q: "Did everyone speak/communicate well with each-other at the start because of language barriers?" [email protected]
A: There are definitely language barriers! For instance, we could have at least 3 different languages been spoken at the same time at any given time when we were together. On Day 0 when we had first met each other, we were very unsure of how to communicate, especially to Cookiezi and Angelsim who spoke Korean and Japanese, but can understand some English. However, we broke down that barrier a little bit over time and found that if we communicate and articulate clearly, we could get everyone present to understand English, and I could help translate for those who still could not. We also got Cookiezi and Angelsim a translator who helped out during the convention (Chinese->Japanese). But overall, language barrier did not stop us from having fun.
Q: "how's cookiezi's voice, is it deep ?" [email protected]
A: It's ok, regularly deep, not as deep as rrtyui's. He's also a fun-loving guy who would laugh at your joke and meme if he understands them. I guess his impression would be that, if you don't know he's a top player, you would find him to be your regular classmate from high school.
Q: "How was it meeting everyone in person and what were they like :0" [email protected]
A: Very surreal! But at the same time very fun! I've had many offline meetups from osu! (multiple times in Vancouver and in China, at Anime North 2016, at Anime Expo 2017, etc.), and I've met with players from across a spectrum of skill levels. To me, I don't think it matters to be a top player, but so long as you are open and can engage and drive conversations, you can make any osu! meetup fun. You have to realize that these people you are meeting share a very distinct common topic with you, and you can say things to them others won't understand. Knowing this, I guess the players at YACA knew they could trust each other, and could depend on each other to have fun and leave great memories. Also Toy summarized how he felt YACA to be so successful: "Everyone there was clearly fanboying each other." When he asked ArtxE and Dsan to sign his shirt, he was surprised to learn that they were surprised that he would ask them to sign, because they all had mutual respect for each other. Angelsim and Rafis, two rivals who had engaged in CQC on the ranking, laughed and chatted a lot together. While everyone initially hesitated a little in front of Cookiezi, but we soon learned that he wasn't cold at all, and then the fun began. This was the same for every other osu! meetup - just be friendly, open, and ready to have fun with the people you've known for ages.
Q: "Did Cookiezi and Wolf discuss the older days of osu! ?" [email protected]
A: I don't actually know this. To my knowledge, they didn't talk 1 on 1 that much, but they certainly did chat. As for what they had specifically chatted, maybe you could go ask one of them directly. I'm sure they would love to share their experience with you guys, too.
Q: "Did the players and the host enjoy themselves? i think this is already well known but :p" [email protected]
A: A most definite yes! We were very tired but we had a lot of fun together, and we all walked away with something either physical or non-physical for memories! Christmas was a great host and a great friend - he's the one who's responsible for the success this time! I'm sure that all invited guests and players have left happily.
Q: "Most beatiful thing u have seen!?" [email protected]
A: When Wolf led that Brain Power chorus. It was completely unplanned but everyone at the booth knew exactly what to do. Personally, I found that to be a very beautiful moment (despite somewhat cringy, I do admit).
Q: "What were players talking about (that u could understand ofc)? Was it the game or just some general discussion/sharing stories kinda thing?" [email protected]_SA
A: They talked about a lot of things, osu-related or not. When we were at the drinking party after Day 1, we had a lot to share with each other, like "oh remember the time you did this play", "dude who's your favorite mapper", "what's it like when you won that tournament"...and yeah, it's very diverse and like I said, because we had a huge common topic we could easily converse and have fun, despite lingual differences. You don't need alcohol to share fond memories of circle-clicking.
Q: "I hope I would be there next chance" [email protected], "Will there be another Meetup somewhere else?" [email protected]_Off
A: We understand that there are also a lot of interest from other top players in the community, and that everyone on here has been talking about YACA. But clearly, it was very impossible for us to invite everyone, despite our relatively good budget. There are definitely names that we really wished to be able to bring over. I don't know if there is going to be another meetup hosted by Christmas on this scale, but I wouldn't put it out of question either. As I said, I only learned about this event 2 to 3 months prior, and we had to quickly shortlist players and decide who to invite. While I did say that being popular in China helps, in reality not even Christmas and myself are sure of what parameters we used to invite the players. Toy thought that all the featured guests (not counting players who tagged along like Max Rixia myself and Polack) are unique - Cookiezi's Cookiezi, Angelsim was mouse god, Rafis a pioneer of AR11 and a former #1, Dsan an old Chinese legend, Rustbell's Rustbell, Axarious is a great mapper and someone who knew Chinese (we had originally intended to just ask him to go with Toy to translate for him and give my spot to another American player, but some circumstances had happened and I was asked to accompany both Toy and Axarious), etc. And Chinese community values uniqueness over PP-farming. Say you have plays from Cold Green Eyes, Hitorigoto, Hime Hime, etc., but the Chinese community would be more interested in players that can do ridiculous reads and FC ridiculous maps like Algebra, HW Fanzhen maps, Ryoushi to Umi no Lyndwurm, etc. So, just purely for example, we would be more likely to invite -GN over _Ryuk, even though the latter is more highly ranked. We were also thinking about community icons such as HappyStick and mappers, too, but by that time we were already hitting our budget ceiling. So maybe, if there's another time, we could see a more diversified guest roster. Just keep being awesome!

2017.06.22 12:18 Pootlover13 After 4years of lurking, this is my (long) official first post to Reddit (and of course it had to be about the Ns in my life)

Hi everyone,
First I need to thank this subreddit for being my saving grace the last few years and making me feel "normal" (whatever that is) and not alone in this world. Really whenever I'm dealing with something N related, I come here to self soothe and find my people. So thank you.
As the title says this is my first post after being on Reddit and successfully lurking for 4 years. Today's the day I need to share my current situation and maybe/hopefully find some comfort and advice/insight. So I do apologize for the super long story that follows. Even if no one reads this, I must say writing this has been extremely cathartic.
Lots of background: my mom and dad divorced when I was 2 after being together for twelve years. He cheated on her with his secretary and got her pregnant (my Maternal grandmother seems to believe she wasn't the first affair either just the first to get knocked up by him). This woman ended up becoming my stepmother who I used to refer to as the Wicked Bitch of the West while growing up but who I now, funny enough, love very dearly. Funny how perspectives change. I should mention here that my dad's dad is a HUGE N himself and has been manipulating and putting down my dad since he was a kid. This is the man (Ngrandfather) who also wrote my maternal grandmother a letter after I visited him for Thanksgiving dinner, in it calling me, at 10 years old, a "butterball" and that he fears I will die early of being fat just like my grandfather (the husband of who he's writing to and who didn't die of being overweight), and die early just like my mom (who had passed away less than a month before this and also didn't die in any connection to her weight). Also, my grandfather cheated on his own wife with his secretary and married her while my dad was still young. Great role models run in that family...
So my dad had 2 kids (son and then daughter) with my stepmom over the course of 6 years, and she had one son already from a previous marriage who was 6 years my senior. From the time I was 2 until I was 10, I maybe saw my dad once every 2-3 years if even that. He would call on my birthday every year to talk for a few minutes and that was about the most contact I had with him during that time sans those few and far between visits with he and his new family while only living an hour away. My mom would always tell him, "just call her once a month, she really would like that." Later his excuse in life for not calling more often during that time would be his fear that my mom, gramms, or aunt would have picked up and he'd have to endure talking to them/being berated by them. He never paid child support. My mom couldn't afford the lawyers and so she and I struggled to make ends meat. I remember being evicted from our house by him and his wife, coming home to all our belongings on the street one day when I was around 6 years old, all of their stuff moved in, and then we were forced to live in a storage/garage for a year until my gramms and gramps took us in. Then my Gramps died. And then 2 years later my mom died when I was 10 and I called to tell my dad the news. Three days later he came to take me away with him because, as his own Ndad had told him, I'm "his."
Thankfully my Gramms is a tough cookie and fought for me. Boy did she fight. She was a retired teacher and ended up going bankrupt in her fight to keep me. Finally after a year of every other weekends being shipped back and forth, therapy, and talks with lawyers, she told him those magical words "if you drop the custody battle, I won't ask for any child support" and poof! Magic! He dropped it. I will say while that time was very emotionally trying, it was one of just a few times in my life where there was a shift in my time spent with my dad and his family. I got to know my sister and brother more, have solid memories with them and of family outings. My first solo ride at Disneyland was on one of these trips and is probably why Peter Pan is still one of my favorites there. I cherished those beautiful fucked up times. I actually felt like I was in a regular old fashioned American family.
And then there was another dip in our "bonding time." After the custody battle ended, he and the family moved out of state from California to the south. I visited them once during the summer for a week while they lived there three years. During that time I didn't hear from him except for birthdays again. Out of sight out of mind. And then they moved again this time to the Northwest and I wasn't told. They were living there for a year when I found out. I visited them there twice or so and loved the time there once again as part of a family. After that my dad moved back to California for work and I wasn't told once again about the move, while my stepmom and the kids stayed up north to stay in school. Eventually they all moved back down also and I visited them all once or twice. But they hated it so much they moved back north without him and some kind of long distance relationship was established. Then my sister stayed to finish high school, but not before my half brother (the one who came along while my parents were still married) went to prison at 16 for sexually assaulting his best friend's little 13 year old sister. Here I should also state my brother had major behavioral and learning issues growing up. But my dad never got him help, just considered him a bad kid and not bright. While I don't excuse for a second what he did to land him in jail, I wonder if any investment from my dad made into his well being early on would have made a difference. He got out years later and would have been out way before but didn't know how to respect authority and take commands, something definitely seen throughout his childhood. And my dad never went to his parole hearings on his behalf to help him. But I digress...
My stepmom went back to California to work and be near my dad, I visited them once and she looked worn out and 20 years older than she is. I wasn't surprised when less than 6 months later while now working in Texas (she by herself relocated for a job), wrote a "Dear Johnny" letter to my dad breaking up with him and requesting a divorce. My dad is a particular man. He likes things how he likes them and looks down on anyone who doesn't agree. He's also a racist and bigot just like his dear old dad. You'd think also he was an 80 year old Englishman instead of a 50 something year old man from Los Angeles. Wears driving caps, gardens, only listens to classical music, and says "orientals" and "schvartzas" when referring to Asian or black people. Ive even tried on so many occasions to correct him to be PC and he just says "but that's what they are!" My stepmom on the other hand has always loved classic rock, been a tough outdoors woman who can change a tire, go camping, go for major hikes through rough terrain, and is super PC. So no surprise about the divorce. It was a long time coming.
It was after this that my dad and I became close in my adulthood. And it made me so happy. The abandoned girl inside me finally had her moment to get to know her daddy. And I'm grateful because I learned so much about him, myself, and even my mom from those times together. He's the only one in my whole family who also loves classical music, classic cars, art history, and walking through manicured gardens as much as I do. We have the same lopsided grin, eyes, and penchant for pastries. We'd see each other once a month, more than any other time in my whole life since I was a baby. He even would send me money every month just to help out which I was extremely grateful for.
And then my sister got married. He and I went on our first flight ever together up to the wedding, and then that's when things started going downhill. I mentioned the Englishman thing because he loves England. So much that he went there for maybe a half year 10 years ago to work, and a handful of smaller vacation trips, and came back with, and never let go of, an English accent. I kid you not, when I told my mom's family they didn't believe me until I played them a voicemail he had left. It was (is) so weird but I never said a thing. And then on this flight to the wedding a guy was hitting on me and asked about my dad's accent and I had no idea what else to do but to lie. I hated it. I had to lie because I didn't want to be embarrassed by my dads fake accent to this cute guy. And then my dad got in on the lie and made up a back story. It made me sick. Later at the wedding my stepmom came and looked amazing. Hotter than I've ever seen and looking free. I was so happy for her. And my dad looked miserable as usual. His dad was there too and I hadn't seen him in at least 10 years because of the butterball comment. I had no desire to be in contact with such an asshole even at such a young age. And sure enough he was still a major N because he made my dad leave the wedding before the cutting of the cake because HE was tired and HE had a sleep schedule he wanted to keep to. He and my step grandmother also after the wedding decided to email me basically belittling me and my weight as they had so many years before but this time I put them in their place and told them I wouldn't stand for it anymore. I've been NC with them since then. I'll mention here also that during the time of the wedding/preparing for it I reconnected greatly with my sister. She's 6 years younger than me and we've always gotten along great. Even if years pass of not seeing each other we always go back to being "seesters." And to add, before the divorce she was super close to my stepmom and was very supportive of the whole thing, thought my dad was a tool. Facebook for a long time has been our greatest friend in being able to keep in touch once a month.
Then major life happened. Within a month of the wedding after coming home I met my future husband, my stepmom met hers, and my dad met his current gf (who none of us like and who is super controlling). The first time my dad was to meet my bf and I was to meet his gf, he emailed me telling me to keep up the English lie. That he told her he was raised there and moved to the states when he was a teenager. This made me sick and my bf (now husband) obviously was not okay with this either especially as far as first impressions go this wasn't the best way to go about it. Needless to say the visit was kept short and cold. This was 4 years ago. Since then my dad and I have not had our get togethers like we had been having. My husband and I had one get together with him out near us and that was in the summer of us first dating and it was extremely awkward. He isn't allowed (or so I'm told by my sister) to go visit family unless it fits into his gfs schedule, while he is constantly visiting her family so much her grandkids now call him "Pops." His excuse to me for not coming out my way when he has weekends off has been his knees hurt when driving long distances, his eyes don't do well at night, and/or it costs so much to stay at a hotel. He always suggests coming to him instead and gets obviously annoyed when I say that's too difficult/there's so much more to do in our big city compared to your smaller town. We were talking on the phone once in awhile but that slowly just became a friendly text on holidays, birthdays, when something big was happening.
Three years ago I got married to that bf. My dad was there with my sister, and my stepmom was there with her bf (now husband). My stepmom came to every event leading up to the big day (coming from out of state), while my dad with my sister visiting became "ill" and only came for the wedding ceremony, ducking out after only an hour of the reception. And no, he didn't walk me down the aisle. That honor was given to my true parents: my Gramms, and my aunt (an N in her own right but not nearly as bad as my dad) and uncle, the three people who truly raised me.
Fast forward: I had to quit my great job to have major back surgery in December of this last year and then miraculously got pregnant a month later. Before the surgery he had no idea what was going on with me and after it only texted me twice to check up on me. For my birthday in January of this year he sent me a whole $32 check since I turned 32 (this man is not a poor man, so this isn't like me being greedy more commenting on his obliviousness to what is needed financially in my life with no job, medical bills, and a baby on the way). He texted me the day of my birthday and called the following day. The next time we connected was when we tried reaching him twice in April to tell him about the baby before we posted the news on Facebook (I was friends with his gf on there and didn't want that to be how he found out). I had already told my sister a few weeks before and my stepmom earlier that week and they promised not to tell him. But he never got back to me so the day we posted I called him ASAP and instead of sounding excited at the news of his first grandchild he was underwhelmed and proceeded to talk about his gfs 98 year old mother passing away a few weeks before and how he's the one handling the estate because there's drama in the family about it. He said he'd call me back to talk more when he wasn't so stressed but never did. Thanks dad. Since then my husband and I called him and left a singing voicemail on his birthday (he texted us back thanks and hopes the baby is doing well), and then texted him happy Father's Day this past Sunday (to which he texted back again thanks and well wishes). On Father's Day on Facebook (which he doesn't have but my sister and stepmom do), I made this post (with honestly no ill will towards him. It was purely a post of thanks to those who really had been there. A truthful post of thanks and appreciation):
"Happy Father's Day to all the men and women in my life who took over the role of dad for me when most of my life mine was not around. I've been so blessed to come from a village of both men and women who stepped in and stepped up to help make me who I am today when both of my own parents were not really around much to participate themselves. Of course my mom who for the beginning majority of my first 10 years was a fantastic single mother who deserves all the respect for doing what she did in every role, as do so many others like her. Followed by my Gramms, who became a single parent to me for all time and continues to be my number one mom, dad, grandma, and best friend all rolled into one. Thank you ❤️
But I'd like to also recognize the men in my life who were my father figures: my Gramps, and my three uncles. These men showed me that you don't have to be the actual father to act like a dad. I love you all!"
I didn't think anything was wrong with this. I have made similar Father's Day posts in the past. My stepmom immediately liked it. The only one who I thought would always take it the wrong way but never would actually see it is my dad (since he always acted like he was more involved than he ever obviously was). My sister and I have had so many talks about how my dad's relationship with me was and how/why it's always been strained. So I was taken aback when my sister posted a status hours after mine: "happy Father's Day to my dad, a man who has worked hard always and sacrificed for all his children their whole life whether they like to acknowledge it or not."
I was flabbergasted. I knew this was directed at me but couldn't believe it considering he never sacrificed anything for me and I thought she got that after all our talks. So I messaged her this: "Eh...not all his kids...but nice Facebook post none the less. I'm genuinely happy you have the relationship with him I sadly was never was afforded. Love you, hope your preemptive move is going well ❤️"
And nothing was said until early the next morning...when my heart got ripped out from what she wrote me. Something I never would have expected from my sweet level headed little sister:
"Look, usually I don't argue with you over Dad because I understand your perspective of him and your relationship. But that post made my physically ill from the amount of garbage in it. I was literally shaking afterwards with how furious I was.
You have zero, ZERO fucking idea about what happened. You've never had the goddamn courtesy to even once consider what Dad had to do or even ask him about it or be a fucking adult and talk to him about your relationship. Did you even once, ONCE think about how he had to give up his young daughter for her happiness? Did you even once try to put yourself in his shoes and how he had to decide to tear his daughter away from the only life she's known and the stability especially after her mother died? I'm not done. Let me write for a goddamn second without you typing. I am done with this relationship if you are this full of poison and toxicity and hatred. Block me, unfriend me, hate me for the rest of your life, I don't care, but that was the last goddamn line for me."
I proceeded to cry for hours and hours after right into off and on for the last couple days. I'm still stunned by this 3 days later. She didn't even wait for a response, she blocked me full force on Facebook and from my ability to keep messaging her. This struck me to the core. I knew my dad and her had been getting closer and he had used his "permitted" time away from his gf recently to go visit my sister for a week, but I had no idea he had brainwashed her so much. Now looking back I can't say I'm not surprised. Stepmom got too "weird" for her after the divorce and dad stayed the same guy. And she got to keep being the Golden Child. Never could do any wrong.
I wrote her my response in an email and in a text. Basically said all the ways that's BS and how she needs to take a seat, not knowing what the hell she's talking about. But I haven't heard back. I doubt I ever will. My baby shower is this summer and she was trying to make it but now I doubt my cousin who's hosting will even get the decent "no" reply. My sister knew everything. She knew my dad used to hit me in the car when I was 2 just for crying because I was a baby, she knew he knew about my step brother molesting me for years and yet never did anything about it, she knew he's the one who left our house to make a new family, she knew how my dad's parents talked to me and yet he never stood up for me, and she knew he never called me except my birthdays growing up and that he dropped the custody battle when money was no longer being required of him. She knew all of this and still she says he sacrificed for me. She still believed his lies over my truths. And it hurts so bad. But what hurt even worse...was when I found out the next day she told him about my post but in her own words and fucked up perspective. My dad didn't even have the decency to call me to talk about it either. Here's his email:
"Subject: Always hopeful
Dear Pootlover13,
I understand that, in an online public forum, you aired some opinions about our relationship. This doesn't change the fact that since you were born I have yearned for a close relationship with you, my first child. This has proved to be more difficult than I could have imagined. Neither my girlfriend nor I have read your post, and we do not have any plans to do so. Expressing strong emotions publicly as you evidently have, may help you feel better in the short run and gain support from your friends, but they don't know me nor my side of things -- and it doesn't help our relationship, which should be our ultimate goal.
You may find this old-fashioned, but I find the best way for two people to communicate important thoughts is directly: face-to-face, or on the phone; even email at times. Facebook and other public online forums are superficial and are not the way I would have hoped you would communicate with me.
My phone number is the same as always. I can always spend time with you if you'd like to meet. I've tried to reach out to you in the past leaving phone messages; it was my invitation to talk, but I felt you didn't respond, so I haven't been sure you've wanted to communicate.
My door -- and my heart -- are always open to you.
Love, Dad"
Even re-reading it now I get so angry at this. He didn't sacrifice, he hasn't called to try and talk, he didn't even bother to read the fucking post himself to see what was actually said. Instead he took the word of his Golden Child to be the word of G-d and from there decided I was being disrespectful, immature, and untrue. I haven't written him back and I don't think I plan to. My baby's due in October and I'm debating whether to even contact him then to tell him about the birth or invite him even to the bris (I'm Jewish and it's a part of what I do in my career which if I explained and wanted to add even MORE to this already hellishly long story, would bring a whole other layer to the fucked upness to it all).
In my life my husband had helped me see that my dad has been to the "societal obligatory big moments:" my Bat Mitzvah, my HS graduation, my college graduation, my wedding, and my masters graduation. He puts out photos of me and brags about me to his friends. But he's not really around. He's never been around. He's shown up when it suited him, when the world tells him he's "supposed to," and even during our few one on one meetups over the years, the conversations only touched subjects that didn't look back on the past but only on what was going on right then. He doesn't know my friends names, my favorite foods, what my husband's family is like (they never even got to meet him at the wedding or the graduations because he always ducked out so fast), hell, he doesn't even know my new mailing address.
As of this last Tuesday I've decided I'm going full NC with my dad. And I guess now my sister too which hurts more and is more surprising to me. I will soon have a son of my own with a man who is already an amazing husband and I know will be an even better father. His family is the most loving group of people and my moms family have been there for me through everything and are great people too. I'm beloved in my community, and have friends who would do anything for me. I no longer need the support or validation from Daddy to know I'm great and am doing great in my life. He is only human and I can respect that he has his own shit in life to deal with as does my sister (who my family has said is projecting onto me but I don't really know about that), and I no longer plan on surrounding myself or my future child and family with toxic people who only lie, blame, belittle, and think so little of me that I don't know my own history. Fuck the narcissists. I'm done. And if my sister sees this and knows this is about her and my dad, GOOD! Maybe even give him a direct link to this so he finally knows what his beloved first born actually thinks of him!
If you made it this far in reading, I'd shower you with gold if I knew how. Thank you for sticking through this. And if this was too much reading for you, I'm not sorry but if it is and you decide to make some asshole comment about how long it is, mazal tov on being no better than those this subreddit group is about.
TLDR: my Nfather likes to think he's been around forever in my life when he hasn't been at all, and has brainwashed my GCsister who I was close with until just recently, into thinking I'm toxic and hateful instead of just being truthful and knowing my own history.
